Who are our role models? Sometimes it's hard to think of a role model. I know when I was younger I would have had a hard time coming up with someone. A role model can be anyone. A parent, a teacher, a neighbour, a politician, a writer, a friend, a public figure.
Girls are often influenced by other girls or women in the media. There are many famous women who are strong role models. There are also many girls/women in the public eye who are not worthy of the title "role model". Yet young girls still tend to be influenced by them. Perhaps it's the glitz and glamour that accompanies the latter category of women.
If you could step back and examine these influences, one question to ask would be, "what have they accomplished?" and "why do I want to be like them?".

Emily Murphy helped win the right for Canadian women to be considered legal “persons” and to keep their right to property after marriage.
Karen Silkwood risked her life to reveal contamination and unsafe practices at the nuclear plant where she worked.
Rachel Carson wrote the book Silent Spring which led directly to the banning of the toxic pesticide DDT and inspired the environmental movement.
Rosa Parks, an African-American woman, refused to obey a law that required her to stand up if a White passenger wanted to sit. Her action inspired a boycott of buses in Montgomery, Alabama, and helped to spark the American Civil Rights Movement.
Molly Brant helped to secure land for Native refugees in Canada after the American Revolution.
Françoise David led thousands of women in The March Against Poverty and addressed the United Nations on the subject.
Buffy Sainte-Marie, an accomplished musician and actress, raised awareness of Native issues and organized educational support for Native peoples.
Sandra Lovelace petitioned the United Nations Human Rights Commission to convince the Canadian government to allow Native women to marry non-Native men without losing their status under the Indian Act.
Hillary Rodham Clinton was not just another first lady. She became the first wife of a president to seek and win national office and the first woman to be elected to the US Senate from New York. In 2007, she announced plans to run for presidency but then conceded in 2008 when she realized Barack Obama had the majority. In 2009, she became Secretary of State.

J.K. Rowling rose from rags to riches. Had a dream and followed her passion. Broke and on welfare she authored the Harry Potter series.
